WARREN COUNTY, NY—When Mother Nature blankets the mountaintops, towns and country roads of Northern New York with fresh snow, the area turns into a wonderland for winter adventures, activities and events. The Lake George Area of the Adirondacks is a great place to escape for a winter vacation retreat. Cozy up in a countryside bed and breakfast, visit one of many museums and galleries or find your smile skiing, riding, snowmobiling, skating, sledding, snowshoeing, ice fishing or just catching snowflakes on eyelashes.
Lake George
Plunge into the icy waters of Lake George during the New Year’s Day Polar Plunge Swim, which is also an all time favorite part of the annual Lake George Winter Carnival. Other carnival events include snow volleyball, hockey shoot-outs, snow sculpture contests and outhouse races. Check out the Lake George Recreational Park for cross-country skiing, ice skating and snow tubing all winter long. Warm up by checking out the hot styles at the Lake George Factory Outlets with more than 70 name brand stores to choose from.
Queensbury
Just off Interstate 87, the town of Queensbury offers travelers an extensive list of lodging establishments and restaurants, making vacationing in the Southern Adirondacks enjoyable and convenient. At the Gurney Lane Recreational Area you’ll find ice skating, sledding and cross-country skiing for a full day of winter adventure. Thaw out at a local café or restaurant and enjoy a hot cup of tea, coffee or soup. Or, stroll through your favorite stores at the Aviation Mall.
Brant Lake
Advanced snowshoers, backpackers and cross-country skiers will find delight exploring the Pharaoh Lake Wilderness Region with entrance points in the town of Adirondack. Hundreds of acres of maintained trails and old tote roads can be found along the lakes, ponds and streams that make up the region. Break through the ice on Brant Lake and spend the day ice fishing.
Bolton
Visit Bolton Landing for a guided snowshoe tour through Up Yonda Farm Environmental Educational Center. Track animal prints in the snow, visit wildlife exhibits inside the museum and enjoy the day exploring the Adirondack wilderness as well as some of the most spectacular views of Lake George.
Warrensburg
Relax next to the fireplace at a bed and breakfast in the town of Warrensburg. Visit during the holidays and enjoy town-wide celebrations including carriage rides, candlelight house tours, craft fairs and caroling. Find a treasure or special gift in one of the many antique shops that line the streets of this quaint Adirondack town.
Stony Creek
This town boasts a winter ranch resort which offers sledding, horseback riding, ice skating, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and plenty of après ski fun, too. Join the fun at the Blizzard Blast event held in March where you can indulge in an all-you-can-eat buffet and listen to live entertainment.
Thurman
Rev up the snowmobile engines and set out on the 118 mile trail system made possible by the Thurman Connection Snowmobile Club. Experience the pristine wilderness of Thurman’s backcountry, stimulated by the thrill of soaring through the snow.
Glens Falls
Discover the rich history of the area by visiting the museums and galleries in the City of Glens Falls. Make a stop at the Chapman Museum and learn about domestic life in the late 19th century. Or, visit The Hyde Collection, a world-class art museum complex and gaze at the works of Degas, Picasso, Homer, Rembrandt and Renoir. After a day of learning and discovery, enjoy an evening of thrills and chills at West Mountain where you can ski, snowboard or tube down lighted trails—just ten minutes away from the city center.
Lake Luzerne
The many ponds and lakes of Lake Luzerne make it an ideal place to ice skate and ice fish during the winter months. Visit Tubby Tubes Winter Fun Park, rent a snow tube and set out on a sledding adventure down local sledding hills. Wrap up in a warm blanket and take a relaxing carriage ride through the Lake Luzerne countryside or speed along snowmobile trails maintained by the South Warren Snowmobile Club.
North Creek
Some of the best skiing and snowboarding in the state can be found at North Creek’s Gore Mountain. Spectacular Adirondack views can be seen from the 3,600 foot summit of the mountain, offering 68 trails and 2,100 feet of vertical drop. Gore Mountain was the first ski area in the United States to have a ski patrol, a recorded ski race and a T-bar lift. Find premier cross-country skiing at The Garnet Hill Lodge where 55 km of trails are groomed daily and scenic winter views can be found around every turn.
Chestertown
Light up your winter nights at Chestertown’s Dynamite Hill Recreation Center, where you can downhill ski. Make your way through the lighted 11 km Caroline Fish Memorial trail system on a pair of cross-country skis or snowshoes, then strap up the laces of your ice skates and skate at the lighted ice rink. Don’t miss the highly anticipated winter event, Krazy Downhill Derby and Broomball Tournament where homemade sleds are judged on creativity, daringness and outrageousness! Be sure to visit Warren County’s authentic ice cream parlor, Main Street Ice Cream Parlor, serving up gifts, cuisine, history and ice cream of course!
Hague
Pack a thermos and set out for the open ice on Lake George! Catch Northern Pike, Lake Trout and Landlocked Salmon along the northern shoreline towns of Hague, Silver Bay and Sabbath Day Point.
